Woodcarving

Six hundred years of carving on the southern slopes of the Xuefeng Mountains.

What this section covers

Fushi woodcarving is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage item in Hunan, practised by this family for four generations and still used for the purposes it grew out of: temple images, ancestral halls and household shrines.

The craft runs on seven stages and a very conservative attitude to the knife. The two works that define the line are forty-eight carved panels at Furong Tower and a seven-year root carving now held by the Huaihua Museum as a Grade-One National Cultural Relic.
